There is no single "best" exchange, there is a best exchange for how YOU trade. Below are the five platforms Kiwis actually use, compared on the things that matter: real cost per trade, NZD support, coin range and regulation. Including the bits each platform would rather we left out.

Fees and coin counts move around, always confirm on the platform before trading. Table data lives in one config file (/assets/exchanges.js) so this page stays current in one edit.
The fee gap is the story. 0% maker and roughly 0.05% taker versus 0.5% to 1% locally means an active trader saves real money every single week, and the 2,900+ coin range covers everything the local platforms will never list. The honest costs: no direct NZD rail (you bridge funds in via a local platform, about 15 minutes once set up), offshore incorporation with no NZ regulatory cover, and overseas regulators have issued notices about MEXC operating without local authorisation in their markets. If those trade-offs are acceptable, nothing local competes on cost. Full detail, including everything we do not love, in the complete MEXC review.
Kiwi company, NZD bank transfers, coins can go straight to your own wallet, and support that answers in NZ hours. You pay for that comfort in the spread, roughly 0.6% to 1% per transaction, and there is no order book or advanced trading. Most NZ traders keep an Easy Crypto account purely as the NZD in-and-out gateway even after they graduate to exchange trading. That combination, Easy Crypto for NZD plus MEXC for trading, is the setup we describe in how to buy crypto in NZ.
Running since 2013, AUSTRAC registered, NZD deposits, an actual order book, and OTC service for large trades. The limits: a deliberately small coin list (about 30) and fees around 0.5% unless you push serious volume. If you mainly hold majors, value a longer track record, and want NZD pairs on an order book, it is a solid conservative choice.
Probably the friendliest interface of the group with NZD support and a big education hub. Standard fees around 0.6% plus spread make it one of the dearer ways to trade regularly, which is why it ranks here despite the polish.
The largest exchange on earth by volume, solid 0.1% fees, and a fine platform on pure functionality. The asterisks are regulatory: Binance has faced enforcement action in multiple major markets, and like MEXC it offers NZ users no local regulatory cover and no direct NZD deposits. Given MEXC beats it on both fees and coin count for the same offshore trade-offs, we see little reason for a NZ trader to prefer it.

Five factors, weighted for how NZ users actually experience a platform: real all-in cost per trade (not the advertised fee), NZD accessibility in and out, coin range and liquidity, regulatory standing and transparency (proof of reserves, track record), and usability. Affiliate status never moves a ranking: the disclosure above tells you exactly who pays us and who does not, and the cons stay published either way.
